Discover the world!
University studies are a great opportunity to do this. We counsel you on all advanced questions, including financing, credit transfer as part of your HSHL studies, and visas. You can also get basic information at our information events, which are held several times during the semester. Once a year, usually in November, we offer an entire series of events: Discover the world! Information days on stays abroad during university studies.
Partnerships and own initiative
We cooperate with universities from England to Thailand. Most of our partnerships have been set up specifically for student exchanges, and it in most cases it has been agreed that our students do not have to pay tuition fees at the partner university. In the EU, Norway, and Turkey, the Erasmus scholarship is automatically included if you have successfully applied for the exchange position. Please note that not every partner university is available for your degree program – you can find out further details at the International Office.
An exchange semester at a partner university is not the only option. “Freemover” stays at other universities are also possible, as is an internship abroad. Each option has its advantages.
- In addition to the close support we provide, a stay abroad at a partner university usually offers the further advantage that no tuition fees are charged for studies on location (there are some exceptions, which the International Office will be happy to inform you about).
- As an alternative to an exchange semester at a partner university, you can also organize your exchange semester independently as a freemover at a university of your choice. You do not apply for this through the International Office of HSHL, but directly to the respective university that you want to attend. As a freemover, you typically pay tuition fees at the host university.
- Please remember this: An exchange semester at a university – whether at a partner university or not – is just one option. An internship abroad is also possible, and this is a great way to combine your international experience with a work experience. We can help you with this endeavor too!
Our scholarship programs
Spending a semester abroad can sometimes involve considerable costs. The exact cost always depends on your destination and your plans. However, there are a number of financing options available, such as BAföG (German Federal Training Assistance Act) for studies abroad as well as various scholarships that can help you finance studies or an internship abroad. You can usually cover part of the costs through a grant from the Erasmus program or PROMOS program, which is awarded directly by our university.
Here is some important information first: You can receive BAföG for studies abroad even if you are not eligible for BAföG in Germany, and it is worth checking the DAAD scholarship database!
Discover Europe with an Erasmus scholarship
-
Here is what it’s about: Discover the unity and diversity of Europe with EU funding
Under the Erasmus program (also known as “Erasmus+”), the EU provides us with funding that we pass on to you for your stay abroad. Two forms of mobility are supported: an exchange semester at one of our Erasmus-partner universities or an internship in any Erasmus program country (except Germany). The following applies to an exchange semester: If your application for an exchange position is successful, you will automatically receive the Erasmus scholarship as well.
-
How much funding is available
We provide funding for studies at an Erasmus partner university from the first mandatory day (start of orientation events) until the last exam of the exchange semester. This is calculated to the day. We can theoretically award funding for an internship abroad from the first to the last working day. However, internship funding depends on the budget we receive from the EU for the respective year. In some years, we have to limit this type of Erasmus funding to 120 days, for example. Please note that you must adhere to the deadlines listed below.
The amount of funding you receive per month (and day) depends on your destination country, the type of stay, and whether you are eligible for additional funding (also called “social top-ups”): for example, if your parents do not have a university degree and you are therefore considered a “first-generation student” (more on this below under the heading Special allowances). Here are the funding rates by country:
- In country group 1 (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Republic of Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden), you will receive a basic funding amount of 600 EUR per month (or 30 days).
- In country group 2 (Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary, Cyprus), you will receive a basic funding amount of 540 EUR per month (or 30 days).
-
Do not miss out: Special allowances and opportunities in the Erasmus program
- If you are doing an internship, you will receive an additional 150 EUR per month – the “SMP supplement.”
- In many cases, you can receive an additional 250 EUR per month as part of a “social top-up”: for example, if your parents do not have a university degree (“first-generation student”). You can get more information in our counseling.
- Since the 2025/26 academic year (Erasmus project year 2025), a travel allowance is paid for each type of mobility. If you travel “sustainably” in accordance with the program guidelines, your travel allowance will be even higher than if you do not. You can get more information in our counseling.
- Special case for graduate internships: Even after graduation, you can receive a scholarship if you complete an internship abroad in the Erasmus region. The application must be submitted while you are still enrolled at our university. You can get further information in our counseling.

How it works
Funding program for an exchange semester at one of our Erasmus partner universities: These are located in the EU, Norway, and Turkey. As described above, if your application for an exchange position is successful, you will automatically receive the Erasmus scholarship as well.
Funding program for an internship in any Erasmus program country: This type of funding program is available for internships in all 27 EU countries (except Germany, as it must be a stay abroad) as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey. Only stays at the following institutions cannot be funded, in order to avoid conflicts of interest and double funding:
- EU institutions and other EU bodies, including specialized agencies
- Institutions that manage EU programs
The exchange places and internship funding are awarded by our university itself through a selection process. We have established the following criteria:
- Preparation, feasibility, and coherence of the project (you can address this in a motivation letter)
- Academic achievements (e.g., grades, number of credit points earned so far)
- Previous financial funding from Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, particularly within the Erasmus program
- Other existing grants for the project (e.g., scholarships)
- Social commitment
We are happy to advise you if needed.
Worldwide funding with a PROMOS scholarship
-
Here is what it's about: Secure a supplement for stays that we are not permitted to support with Erasmus scholarships
The PROMOS scholarship of DAAD, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, awards partial scholarships to students to support study stays and internships abroad. The program offers financial support to anyone who is spending a maximum of six months abroad and does not receive funding through Erasmus or directly through the DAAD from its own scholarship programs such as HAW.International.
-
How much funding is available
The DAAD has set scholarship rates ranging from 350 and 550 EUR per month, depending on the destination country. However, this program is not as well-funded as the Erasmus program of the EU. The funding period is generally one to two months, even if you study longer or complete a longer internship abroad. So if your application is successful, you will usually receive less than 1,000 EUR in total funding. Therefore, the PROMOS scholarship should only be considered a small supplement. Basic funding should be secured.
-
How it works
Funding for study and research stays worldwide: Study stays in foreign countries, both European and non-European, with a minimum duration of one month are funded. (Within Europe, only stays at universities that are not Erasmus partner universities can be funded.)
Funding for internships outside Europe: Stays in foreign countries outside Europe with a minimum duration of one month can be funded.
In principle, stays in both the summer and winter semesters can be funded. For a stay in the following winter semester, the application deadline is June 1. For a stay in the following summer semester, the application deadline is January 15.
The following conditions must be met in order to apply.
- Enrollment at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences at the time of application and throughout the entire stay abroad.
- Simultaneous funding through PROMOS and scholarships from other public funds is not permitted. (Exception: scholarship for Germany and BAföG). Simultaneous funding through PROMOS and talent promotion programs or private foundations is permitted.
- Funding can only be granted if the German Federal Foreign Office has not issued a travel warning for the region in question.
If these requirements are met, you can apply for a PROMOS scholarship. The scholarships are awarded by our university itself through a selection process. We have established the following criteria:
- Preparation, feasibility, and coherence of the project
- Academic achievements (e.g., grades, number of credit points earned so far)
- Existing knowledge of the working language
- Social commitment
We are happy to advise you if needed.
-
Please also note the following information
There are only a limited number of scholarships available, and there is no legal right to funding.
The decision regarding funding under the PROMOS program is made by a selection committee based on the submitted documents. The decision is usually communicated within six weeks of the application deadline. The selection committee only considers complete application documents that were submitted by the deadline.
The decision is made based on an overall assessment of the criteria mentioned above. In individual cases, other circumstances of the application may be included in the decision.
PROMOS funding must be declared when applying for BAföG (German Federal Training Assistance Act) for studies abroad. For BAföG for studies abroad includes a deduction allowance of 300 EUR per month.
The DAAD allows students to take out international insurance (a combined health, accident, and personal liability insurance policy). The minimum insurance period is one month.
