Democracy in the scientific fields

The Senate is an important body for the self-governance of Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences. In accordance with the Higher Education Act of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, its tasks include:

• participating as members in the university electoral assembly in the election and dismissal of members of the Presidential Committee,
• issuing a statement on the annual report of the Presidential Committee,
• enacting and amending the basic regulations, framework regulations, and university regulations,
• approving the planning principles,
• making recommendations and issuing statements on the draft of the university development plan and university contract, on the evaluation reports, on the business plan, and on the principles for distributing positions and funds to the departments, central scientific institutions, and central operating units,
• making recommendations and issuing statements on matters of research, art, teaching, and studies that affect the entire university or central institutions or are of fundamental importance.

The Senate consists of elected representatives of the group of professors, the research assistants, the non-research assistants, and the students. The members of the Presidential Committee, the heads of the departments, the representative of severely disabled persons, the Chairperson of the Staff Council, the Gender Equality Officer, and the Chairperson of the General Student Committee are also members of the Senate in an advisory capacity.

The democratic election of Senate members takes place at regular intervals. The term of office of the representatives is four years, except for student representatives, whose term is two years.
