University Didactics

Teaching research | Further education | Networking

The Department of University Didactics offers support and further professionalization of academic teaching. The focus is on the practical preparation of new impulses and findings from research in higher education, teaching, and learning.

Good teaching is a sophisticated undertaking and involves a wide variety of requirements and demands.

The Department of University Didactics at HSHL offers all members of the teaching staff a broad spectrum of opportunities for advice, exchange, and further training in university teaching methods. This enables them to reflect on their own teaching practices, (further) develop teaching and learning scenarios, modules, and study programs, and also network and exchange ideas with colleagues, grow personally, and ensure and improve the quality of their teaching and study programs. In this context, the focus is on learning from and with each other.

The HSHL Mission Statement and the core values and principles it contains are the foundation on which all the programs rest.

Overview of Further Education Offers

  • Guidance and coaching

    ·         Guidance or coaching sessions give the teaching staff the opportunity to discuss individual questions about teaching and develop tailored solutions and strategies.

  • Workshops

    ·         Internal workshops are offered on various didactic topics. These are aligned with the needs of the teaching staff. In addition, they can take advantage of the offers provided by the Higher Education Didactics Network in North Rhine-Westphalia.

  • Teaching observation

    ·         Teaching observation sessions are also offered. Observation sessions open up the possibility to bring in external perspectives, providing opportunities to talk about successful and difficult aspects of a course within a trusting environment and optimize them.

  • Teaching Analysis Poll (TAP)

    ·         In addition to the “classic” course evaluations, the "TAP" method provides the option for a qualitative interim evaluation of courses while the semester is still in session.  While the instructor is not present, the students identify the aspects of the course that promote or hinder learning. They then discuss these aspects in a feedback meeting with the instructor and develop potential changes together.

  • Supervision

    ·         University life often lacks an appropriate setting to address challenging situations related to teaching and learning. Individuals often face their problems alone while wishing for insights and feedback. Supervision is a way for individuals to work on their own practical cases, questions and problems with colleagues and focus on the processes and solutions.

  • Further development of study programs

    ·         In re-accreditation procedures, a key assessment point in the sense of constructive alignment is how well the study program is designed to focus on developing skills. The Department of Higher Education Didactics provides guidance in the form of advice and/or moderation to support the further development of study programs.

  • Formats of collaboration

    ·         A variety of interest groups and working groups collaborate on, modify and experiment with various topics related to didactics.
