Current project partners (selection)

Optimizing the interface between people and technology is the focus of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan-Niklas Voigt-Antons' career. He leads the Immersive Reality Lab at HSHL, which researches and develops immersive applications, currently with eleven research staff and seven student assistants. Since 2024 he has also headed the HealthTech-HL research group, and since 2022 the university's Human-Machine Interaction research area.

Born in Duisburg, Prof. Voigt-Antons was drawn to study psychology at Darmstadt Technical University, where he received his diploma in 2008 with the overall grade sehr gut. He earned his doctorate in 2014 at the Technical University of Berlin, in Faculty IV, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with magna cum laude; his dissertation on the neural correlates of perceived speech quality was published as a monograph by Springer.

From 2009 to 2014, alongside his doctorate, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan-Niklas Voigt-Antons worked at the Telekom Innovation Laboratories as a Research Scientist. There he was the expert on all issues relating to the measurement of user states in telecommunications systems, and specialized in the development of measurement methods. Earlier, at Daimler AG, he had focused on physiological measurement methods for automotive applications and how they can be used during the development of driver assistance systems.

From 2015 to 2021 he was Senior Research Scientist at the Quality and Usability Lab of the Technical University of Berlin, where he remains a guest researcher. On November 1, 2021, he took over the professorship "Applied Computer Science with a Focus on Immersive Media" at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences.

Since 2015 he has raised approximately 4.6 million euros in third-party funding, around 2.8 million of it in projects that began after the appointment. He is the author of more than 230 scientific publications (full list) and an active speaker at renowned international conferences. He co-developed ITU-T Recommendation P.812 on subjective test methods for interactive virtual reality, is a reviewer for scientific conferences and journals, and serves on advisory boards and editorial boards. Immersive Theatre Training (ITT) Immersive training for theatre technology, a field in which apprentices have to master rigging and stage-machinery procedures that are expensive and dangerous to practise for real. 2026 to 2028, ERDF North Rhine-Westphalia.
